Dear Future Longhorn:
Congratulations on your acceptance to The University of Texas!
There are over 7,000 alumni from UT Austin currently residing in the DC area. We get together often to share our love for The University.
The DC Chapter of the Texas Exes is particularly proud of its program to award scholarships to incoming UT freshmen from Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. Since 2006, the DC Texas Exes have awarded over $15,000 to local high school seniors heading to UT Austin. Two merit scholarships that we award annually are the Barbara Jordan Memorial Scholarship and the James Decherd Scholarship. Scholarships may also be provided to attend Camp Texas.
Since 1996, the DC Texas Exes have dedicated a scholarship to honor the memory and legacy of Barbara Jordan. Best known for her defense of the principles represented in the United States Constitution during the impeachment of President Richard Nixon in 1974, Jordan served the State of Texas in the Texas Senate from 1967 to 1972 and was elected to the US House of Representatives, serving from 1973 to 1979. She was the first African American woman to serve as a member of the Texas Senate, as well as the first elected to the House from the South. The scholarship will be $1500.
The James Decherd Scholarship was established in memory of Dr. James Decherd. Remembered for his years of continued support to The University of Texas, Decherd was also actively involved with the DC Texas Exes, serving as the Treasurer of the local chapter. The scholarship will be awarded in an amount to be determined during the scholarship selection process, but at least $500.
The DC Texas Exes are in the process of modifying the scholarship application process. Starting in early September 2014, prospective UT Austin students will be able to visit scholarships.texasexes.org to access an online Texas Exes Scholarship application. The application will be open until December 1, 2014. If you have any questions in the meantime, please don't hesitate to contact us at [email protected].
Dec 2nd update: The Texas Exes Scholarship Application Deadline has been extended to January 5th for the General Application – this covers Named and Chapter Scholarships. If a student is interested in the Forty Acres Scholars Program, they will need to apply by December 8th. If you have come to this page as an educator from a DC/MD/VA area high school and would like to learn more about applying to The University of Texas at Austin, we would also be happy to speak with you and connect with you resources in Austin to ensure you have the information you are looking for.
