About the Speaker

Mark Murray is the Senior Political Editor at NBC News, where he covers politics for the network, writes and edits its popular First Read blog, and appears daily on MSNBC and Washington DC’s NBC affiliate to discuss the latest political news. He also serves as a key manager of NBC’s political coverage, giving direction to the network’s reporters and producers. Before joining NBC News in 2003, Murray spent five years as a reporter at National Journal. And he has written freelance articles published in the New York Times (Sunday op-ed page), the Atlantic Monthly, the Washington Monthly, Washingtonian magazine, and Washington City Paper. Murray is a 1996 graduate of the University of Texas at Austin (B.A.), and he lives in Washington DC with his wife Sasha and son Caleb.

About the Band

It's been five years now since Wood & Wire sprouted out of the rich musical soil of Austin, Texas. In that time, they've written music, recorded albums, and performed at some of the most notable festivals and venues across the country. In the often tightly defined genre of bluegrass music, Wood & Wire's ethos is not unheard of. Nor are the elements of song crafting, so often associated with their Texas home, that permeate their sound. That said, what comes out of the Wood & Wire blender is something entirely its own.  Websitehttp://www.woodandwireband.com/

LONGHORNS DISCUSS WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE & JANE AUSTEN

All alumni and parent Tartans are invited along with University of Texas alumni in a discussion and exhibit walk through of Will & Jane: Shakespeare, Austen and the Cult of Celebrity. This exhibit is co-curated by UT Professor of English, Janine Barchas and CMU Professor of Literary and Cultural Studies, Kristina Straub. We will have an afternoon discussion over hors d'oeuvres and wine and then explore the exhibit. Be sure to read this review from the New York Times.

About the Exhibit:
Will & Jane: Shakespeare, Austen and the Cult of Celebrity takes a close look at these two celebrated authors' literary afterlives—and finds some surprising parallels. For both, adaptations and parodies in different eras helped popularize their work and make it more approachable (think Shakespeare Undead and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies). Milestone events also increased their fame: for Shakespeare, the much-heralded 1769 Shakespeare Jubilee, and for Austen, a burst of 1990s films and a watershed BBC production. From portraits to porcelain collectibles, branded merchandise, and gravestone rubbings, these two authors have traced intriguingly similar arcs in their posthumous fame. Explore their stories and the nature of celebrity in the 400th anniversary year of Shakespeare's death and the 199th anniversary of Austen's in 2016.

When:
Sunday, October 16
3:30 p.m.

Where:
The Folger Shakespeare Library, Boardroom
