The History
On February 23, 1836 General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna army of more than 6,000 began its siege on the Alamo in San Antonio, catching the citizens of the city by surprise. William B. Travis, the commander of the Alamo sent forth couriers carrying pleas for help to communities in Texas:
Fellow Citizens and Compatriots: I am besieged with a thousand or more of the Mexicans under Santa Anna. I have sustained a continual Bombardment and cannonade for 24 hours and have not lost a man. The enemy has demanded surrender at discretion, otherwise, the garrison is to be put to the sword, if the fort is taken. I have answered the demand with a cannon shot, and our flag still waves proudly over the wall. I shall never surrender or retreat. Then I call on you in the name of Liberty, of patriotism, of everything dear to the American character, to come to our aid with all dispatch. The enemy is receiving reinforcements daily and will no doubt increase to three or four thousand in four or five days. If this call is neglected I am determined to sustain myself as long as possible and die like a soldier who never forgets what is due his honor and that of his country
VICTORY OR DEATH.
William Barrett Travis, Lt. Col. Commander
The Cause
As early as 1900, March 2 became a day for Texas Exes to observe a holiday. A great deal of tradition and sentiment surrounds the celebration on the local level. In that year, The Ex-Students Association adopted a resolution:
Whenever two ex-students of the University of Texas shall meet on
Texas Independence Day, they shall sit and break bread and pay tribute
to the institution which made their education possible.
Each year, the DC Texas Exes gather at a special celebration to raise money for our scholarship funds. These funds are used the following academic year to assist deserving DC Metro area students who choose to attend The University of Texas at Austin. In addition, each year we are able to provide stipends for Texas students who participate in the Archer Fellows Program. |
